|Major Tourist Spot in Chilika
Inside the lake itself, islands surrounded by a vast stretches of blue water are the main tourist attractions. The lake is an excellent site for island trips as each island has some uniqueness.
The lake provides tourists with ample opportunities for fishing, boating and bird watching, particularly from November to mid- February when large numbers of migratory birds come from distant places around the globe to Nalabana and its neighborhood. The Irrawaddy dolphin is a rare species, found in various parts in Chilika Lake. Dolphins are most abundantly noticed along the outer channel up to the Satapada. According to the specific nature of each site inthe lake the tourist points can also be distributed into several categories: bird watching, boating, dolphin watching, fishing and scenic view ( Fig).
|Approaching Chilika
The Chilika area is located within an approachable distance of 150km from the nearest airport, which is at Bhubaneswar. The nearest railway stations are at Balugaon and Rambha, whereas National Highway No. 5 touches Chilika at Balugaon, Barkul and Rambha (Fig).
|Lodging Facilities
There is a Panthaniwas (Guest house) at Rambha run by OTDC (Orissa Tourism Development Corporation) which also can support the ecotourism by providing tourist accommodation as well as supporting or assisting them to visit the nearby tourist location with a minimal cost. Other than this there are several other nearby places like Puri, Barakul, Satpada where tourist can stay and reach Chilika with minimum time.
